a. I would like to collect 20-30 female G. lineaticeps (variable field crickets) from the reserve. I would collect them on 1-4 nights between the period of July 28-31 and August 20-25 (I don't yet know the exact nights I would collect, but I can notify you via email or phone at least 24 hours in advance). b. I would collect them by broadcasting male song and by looking for females on the ground. c. No crickets or flies of any kind would be brought onto the reserve. d. I would not need housing. I would arrive at the reserve around sunset on the nights I collect and depart between 11:00 pm and 1:00 a.m. My wife and I have a condo in the Ventura area, which is within manageable driving distance a number of my field sites (Cayucos, Sedgwick, Goleta, Grapevine, and the Santa Monica Mountain National Recreation Area). So I would drive back and forth on the nights I collect. Before some of my students started doing work at the reserve, I collected crickets there for many years (I think I started in 2001 or 2002). Michael Williams was the reserve director at the time, and he gave me the gate combination so that I could enter and depart on the nights I collected. Most of my collecting was done around the equipment shed to the right of the road that leads to the housing, although I also collected up on the little mesa, and along the road in the small valley to the west (I think) of the housing. I stay away from the housing area so that I don't disturb people in the middle of the night. I would plan to follow the same procedures, unless you have objections.
