Retreat Purpose: For staff and SBCC College student interns to come together for the purposes of strategic planning, staff unity and bonding, and connect with the natural world and self. To tell you a little more about our team and our work... Santa Barbara City College Center of Sustainability, in partnership with the School Food Initiative, is creating and maintaining edible gardens in elementary schools in seven Santa Barbara County school districts through the School Gardens (SG) Program. The mission is to connect students to their food and their environment through school gardens. By placing edible gardens in schools with inspired garden educators, we create: 1) A reconnection with ?where food comes from? and its health benefits by experiencing the challenges and fun of growing and eating food. 2) A dynamic living laboratory to teach numerous disciplines (science, math, language arts, history, and much more) in a connected and relevant environment. 3) Inspiration for teachers to integrate curriculum in creative ways inside and outside the classroom. 4) A cooperative system whereby working together in the soil, we cultivate not just food, but respect for ourselves, each other, and the earth. Since the program?s inception in spring of 2009, the School Gardens program has installed twenty-three and enhanced two existing school gardens as well as supported three schools with their independent garden programs. During the 2011-12 school year, the program will install seven more gardens. www.scoolfood.org/gardens
