Cassidy will be continuing my survey of oak trees, focusing on oaks that are in Figueroa Valley. He will be using methods as described previously, and no permanent marker will be placed to disturb the area. Vegetation on the north and south sides of each tree will be surveyed using a 1x1m quadrat and a small sample of vegetation will be clipped and weighed to estimate productivity. Locations of surveys will be recorded using a GPS unit. I will not be joining him on this trip, but he has full knowledge of reserve safety procedures, how to sign in, and also proper use guidelines. These data will be used to determine the legacy effect oaks have on grasslands, and to construct a time series of this effect. Our surveyed oaks vary in time since death, and we will also survey paired living oaks to estimate the current effect of trees on vegetation. Pilot surveys last year suggest the facilitative effect of trees on species such as B. diandrus and certain Brassicaceae species can last more than 40 years after the oaks death.
