As detailed above, I am interested in patterns in the landscape and vegetation differences underneath oak trees and in the open grasslands. Right now I am focusing my data collection on the Mesa area, where I will be working on 4/25. The questions I am working on at present include: (1) How is the phenology of Bromus diandrus altered beneath oak trees compared to open grassland? and (2)How do soil properties differ underneath oaks and in open areas? On 4/25 I will be measuring end-of-season phenology of a few selected Bromus diandrus individuals away from and underneath trees. Measurements that I will collect include leaf senescence (% leaf length brown), the number of seeds on an individual and the % of those seeds that have matured and dropped from the plant. I will also be GPSing the 20 trees I used for my vegetation surveys and possibly begin collecting soil cores depending on time. The soil cores will be collected along transects in several different habitats beneath trees and in the open including near the trunk, underneath the drip line, just outside the canopy edge and open areas.
