To identify genetic basis of any local adaptation in seedlings of California Valley Oak (Quercus lobata). Oak restoration ecologists in California are concerned with mixing genetic stocks of oaks by using acorns collected at one site in restoration efforts at another site. We have worked extensively on population genetics of California oaks in our laboratory at UCLA. As part of that work, we have 4000 oak seedlings in the greenhouse for which we know multiple marker genotypes, and parentage. We would like to compare responses to variability in water supply of these seedlings when they are planted back at the UC Sedgwick Reserve, whence they were collected. We envision a dense planting in deer and rodent exclosures, belonging to Eric Seabloom of UCSB, that we would monitor for approximately 2 years. We expect our results to indicate whether there is genetic variability in drought tolerance among oak seedlings. Our results may indicate whether there could be local adaptation in Valley Oak that is important for restoration efforts in southern California.
