Summary: We are conducting a long-term oak regeneration program to improve our understanding of the role of cattle and other ecological factors in limiting or promoting recruitment by valley oak (Quercus lobata), blue oak (Q. douglasii), and coast live oak (Q. agrifolia). The specific goals of this research are to : 1) conduct large-scale grazing and related experiments that will determine the factors affecting the establishment of valley, live and blue oaks in ecosystems represented on Sedgwick Ranch; 2) develop a prescription for actively promoting oak regeneration in such ecosystems; 3) disseminate our findings in the form of presentations, onsite demonstration projects, and literature that is directed towards local landowners and resource managers interested in the mnagement and restoration of oak woodlands. Detailed project description: We are continuing our longterm study of factors affecting oak recruitment. In the spring of 2003 (April and May), we will monitor the understory herbaceous vegetation in our permanent quadrats located within each large plot. Each plot contains ten 1.0 x 0.5 m quadrats, which have been sampled each year since 1996. We will continue to monitor and maintain all large experimental plots. This includes a total of 33 50 x 50 m plots located in savanna areas, and 22 25 x 50 m plots located in blue oak woodland (southwestern Lisque), as well as new oak planting experiments established in 2002-2003. In the late spring and early summer of 2003, we will monitor all oak seedlings in our experimental plots, to record survivorship and growth.
