Sedgwick Reserve

The goal of this project is to determine if there is an evolutionary tradeoff between tolerance to serpentine soils and competitive ability. For several generations, ten annual plant species native to the serpentine hummocks at Sedgwick Reserve have been grown in the inter-hummock matrix area. This area differs considerably from their original habitat in several ways. Soil conditions are more benign (higher water and nutrient availability; potentially lower heavy metal toxicity) but the size and density of individuals is much greater, resulting in increased competition. We will determine if there has been adaptation to the conditions experienced by these ?matrix? populations by comparing their performance to that of hummock populations in both types of environment.
