I would like to assess your Lasthenia population. Have you seen any in flower? I'm trying to figure out if there are combinations of the two cryptic species (L. californica and L. gracilis) and if there are combinations of races (each species has 2 races: A and C). It is likely that you have L. gracilis Race A, but no one has really looked at many populations in the south, which is why I'm coming down. Unfortunately, you can't tell the species or race without some lab work so what I do is to look at the population and guess about where I might expect to find differences i.e. different soils or moisture levels and then sample a few plants that encompass that variability. The pappus is a decent indicator that you have two different things so if I see variation in the pappus, then I would sample more plants, but if everything looks the same I would collect ~ 20 plants per patch. Figuring out what a patch is, is also difficult and it really depends on whether there are obvious environmental differences across a population. I also make some phenological observations at each patch by counting the number of buds/flowers/postflower in a little quadrant. At each big patch, I also collect ~ 300 g of soil. I observe pollinators and would like to collect voucher specimens of the pollinators as they visit. So if all of this sounds acceptable then I would like to visit on Thursday and collect 1)some plants 2) soil 3) and pollinators.
