This work is intended to help better understand how grazing and soil productivity interacted to drive patterns in species diversity and composition in California grasslands. Between 2000 and 2002 the Ecology Program of USFS Region 5 carried out monitoring of the effects of different levels of grazing on plant species composition and diversity in annual grasslands and oak woodlands around the state, using long-term grazing exclosures. This work was intended to help better understand how grazing and soil productivity interacted to drive patterns in species diversity and composition. We will be sampling plots for plants species diversity and composition, as we as collecting biomass and soil samples in order to asses site productivity.UC-Davis will carry out one further field season of field measurements using FS protocol and then conduct an analysis of the new and old data. The final products will be the analysis results, a database, and a scientific publication published jointly by UCD and the Ecology Program. The grazing exclosure sites maintained at Sedgwick Reserve will serve as one sampling location for this project. We have received permission to use these sites from Professor Carla D?Antonio who is currently doing research there.
