A star party is an event where observational astronomy enthusiasts gather under dark skies to view the heavens above. The VAAS Star Party provides community observing resources for amateur astronomers from Santa Ynez to Santa Maria. Participants have the opportunity to develop and share projects in deep sky observing including new equipment configurations, video and imaging, object cataloging, and just naked eye gazing. Star party etiquette should be followed as much as possible. Bright lights ruin night vision, so we try to begin before it gets dark and encourage use of a red lighting or keep flashlights off. These events are weather-permitting, and the number of club members attending can vary a great deal due to a variety of reasons. We requires a site with dark sky conditions, clear horizon, and firm ground for equipment set up and observer safety. Since I am unfamiliar with the specific resources of Sedgwick reserve, please allow me to state needed resources generally. Open area far from light sources with low horizon and private vehicle access (car or SUV(van or pickup)) to set up private equipment for observing - telescopes, portable power supplies, folding tables and chairs, etc. If other resources are available, such as tent cabins, bunkhouse, and/or Gator to move equipment in case of no vehicle access these would be put to good use. This activity should have minimal impact to ecosystems and cultural resources and used areas should be left in the condition in which they were found.
