The search for geomorphic laws and thresholds that provide both mechanistic explanation and predictive measures for processes acting on the surface of the earth have made significant progress in the last decade related mainly to the advent of high-res topographic data. In this study we seek to revisit previously held assumptions about channel initiation thresholds through the implementation of field based terrestrial LIDAR. This system works much like traditional surveying equipment but is capable of cm scale resolution at a range of ~1 km in a 360 orientation in one 10 minutes scan. We will apply this incredibly valuable technique to a number of channel heads and catchments in hopes of unraveling the complexity and pattern of channel initiation in order to ultimately augment and evolve current models of landscape evolution. Basically, we will crate really high resolution maps of small catchments to look at relationships between drainage areas and channel slopes and make really beautiful images!
