Sedgwick Reserve

The California Floristic Provence (CFP) is a biodiversity hotspot. My research focuses on common native woody plants as well as four clades found in the CFP with a high number of extant lineages (variously considered species, subspecies and varieties, and hereafter referred to as species): Arctostaphylos, Ceanothus, Ribes, and Lupinus. I use comparative ecophysiology to evaluate closely-related species endemic to contrasting environment and to evaluate ecotypes of common California native woody plants. My research will combine trait data gathered from field and common garden (UC Botanical Garden) conditions with manipulative experiments. Methods My research will involve cutting on very small portions of plant to measure their water and photosynthetic status in the field. I will also need to remove small sample from the reserve to calculate leaf size, woody density, and sapwood to leaf area ratios. These samples will be a very small amount of the entire leaf area of the plant, on the order of twigs 4-12 inches long. I will not be bringing any plant material on to the reserve, and I will not be setting up any long term manipulation. I will install some environmental data loggers. I am planning on using ibuttons, which are about the size of a quarter, to monitor temperature and humidity.
