Sedgwick Reserve

I am studying the association between exotic species and oak canopies by surveying both the vegetation and the soil. My research questions address differences between soil and vegetation underneath and away from oaks, comparing evergreen and deciduous oaks and also looking at variation related to grazing. During this stay I will be continuing collecting soil samples using a hand coring device. The samples will be collected underneath and around the canopies of ten pre-selected oak trees on the Mesa. The samples extend 15 cm below the surface and are approx 3 cm in diameter. I will take them away from the reserve to the UCSB campus for analysis.
