Since research requires a marked population of squirrels,I will pre-bait, trap, and mark California ground squirrels for use in my future research. Considerable effort will be required to locate squirrels, capture, mark with permanent and temporary methods to facilitate identification of individuals in later captures. I will locate an appropriate study site and place peanut butter near squirrel burrows. I will then begin trapping with Tomahawk live traps. The traps will have a cover on them to provide shade for the squirrels and they will be checked frequently. Squirrels will be marked with hair dye and ear tags. I will also weigh squirrels with spring scales, measure zygomatic arch breadth, and determine their sex and reproductive status. I will take care not to disturb any ongoing research plots.
