This course will provide a broad overview of concepts related to the study of mammals. Lecture components will cover the origin, evolution, adaptation, biogeography, physiology, ecology, and behavior of mammals. Lab/field components will focus on the identification and classification of mammals around the world and provide experience using standard field techniques to survey mammals native to central California. Goals: This course is designed to expand knowledge and understanding of the evolution, classification, life history, and ecology of mammals. There will be opportunities to experience identifying, sampling, and conducting research on local mammals. I would like to have students (1) use Sherman traps to survey small mammals at the North Transition Grid near the campsite and (2) learn the basics of tracking along Perimeter Rd (or whatever smaller roads are convenient).
