I will be testing hypotheses about the evolution of cooperation in white-nosed coatis (Nasua narica) in Panama. I will begin by testing the assumption that coatis are capable of recognizing and differentially responding to each other on an individual basis. My method for testing this assumption will be playback experiments using coati vocalizations as experimental stimuli. An integral part of these experiments will be the use of control stimuli. For this, I will use recordings of California bird vocalizations. These will serve to identify whether coatis are responding because they are truly recognizing a difference between non-group members and group members or whether they are simply responding due to the novelty of the playbacks. I would like to record the vocalizations of native California birds at Stunt Ranch Reserve. I will record natural vocalizations without disrupting or manipulating the birds natural behavior or habitat in any way. I do not anticipate having any impact on any natural systems, or other research. I do not need to use any facilities or resources.
