This is the schedule of activities planned for Pittsburg High school students: Friday 4/23 12:30-3:30 Sample aquatic insects at Carmel River (include sampling in different microhabitats of the river-riffles vs. pools, etc. 4:00-4:30 drive to Hastings 4:30 - 5:00 unpack 5:00-6:30 cook dinner; other students help set up for night activity or write in journals 6:30 - 8:00 dinner and cleanup 8:00-9:00 night lighting for night flying insects, night walk, set out track plates Saturday 4/24 8:00 - 12:00 natural history walk/talks with orienteering/scavenger hunt activity: Three small groups of students, each led by a graduate student will walk on a predetermined route through the reserve, discussing natural history highlights of the area and keeping lists of wildlife is seen. They will also conduct short activities at specific sites along the way (e.g. making journal entries, identifying and collecting certain plants and/or insects, interpreting the landscape with the aid of a topo map). 12:00-1:00 lunch at classroom 1:00-4:00 insect sampling in native vs. introduced grass plots (in Nasella patch just behind Office) 4:00-6:00 setting small mammal traps 6:00 - 7:30 dinner cooking/eating/cleanup 8:00 night activity, checking mammmal traps throughout the night Sunday 4/25 early a.m. continue checking traps at several points through the night 6:00 pick up traps, finish processing mammals and completing journal entries, results will be compared with previous field trips 9:00-10:30 packing/cleanup 10:30 - 12:00 make observations at bird feeders and/or lizard catch and release around buildings to examine variation in size and color 12:00 - leave for PHS
