I will be doing 2 projects: 1. The continued monitoring of the reproductive success, size and web locations of black widow spiders in the field. This year I will be attempting to mark a subset of individual females with non-toxic paint in order to ensure that they are not moving from one web site to another. 2. I will be attempting to collect data on the movement of egg sacs, by females, into and out of their refuges depending on environmental temperature. I will be collecting several females from the field and letting them construct webs and lay eggs in cages with refuges of know depth. I will be tracking the position of the egg sac over the course of the day as the ambient temperature increases. I will also be removing egg sacs from some females webs and testing whether or not they are able to hatch if not attended by the female.
