Hastings Natural History Reservation

Our group (16 students, two instructors, and a coordinator) will travel to a different field site each day (probably Toro Park, Garland Park, and a seaside location: if time permits, the instructors may scout and use a field location on Hastings Reserve as well!). We would like to use the conference room for breakfast and dinner, and for lectures in the evening. All participants will be adults. This workshop is being offered by The Jepson Herbarium at UC Berkeley. Workshop description: Are you ready to jump into botanical detective work? With a working knowledge of common plant families, and comfort in using plant keys, identification can be an enjoyable challenge. This workshop introduces students to the flora of the San Francisco or Monterey Bay region and the techniques used to identify plants of California. Emphasis will be on learning to recognize characteristics of the areas top 20 plant families. We will practice keying plants in the field using the book Plants of the San Francisco Bay Region: Mendocino to Monterey (Linda H. Beidleman and Eugene N. Kozloff, 2003), which all workshop participants will need to purchase before the workshop. Changes in plant family names in the second edition of The Jepson Manual will be noted but not emphasized. We will discuss the nature, use and importance of herbarium collections. There also will be an introduction to reference books valuable for identifying California plants. Other than the introductory session, the workshop will be held outdoors (rain or shine). Participants may drive up to 75 miles per day to the field sites and walk up to three miles each day. This workshop will not involve collection of plants. Students must attend all four days of the workshop, because the introductory information will lay the foundation for the rest of the workshop.
