I am hoping that we can work together to present a new workshop titled "California Tiger Salamander Upland Sampling, Biology and Conservation" at the Hastings Natural History Reservation. There has been much interest in my past workshops on tiger salamanders, and I anticipate a similar response for this new workshop. Unlike prior workshops this one will focus on the upland habitat of this threatened salamander, and especially the methods for sampling/surveying upland habitats. The dates we have tentatively agreed upon for this workshop are June 21-23, 2010. Hastings is a good site for this workshop because it provides a classroom, overnight accommodations, and a site for field exercises ? all in one. Importantly there is a known breeding pond immediately adjacent to their property line, thus providing us with a high probability of capturing metamorphosing juveniles as they emerge from the pond. The workshop will include field and classroom instruction on June 21, 22, and 23. All activities will take place on the reserve property. The field sessions will focus on an exercise designed to get participants thinking about the upland ecology and sampling methods for this species. I will provide hands on instruction and experience in drift fence construction, proper drift fence and pitfall trap operation and maintenance, how to avoid capturing/killing non-target animals, proper handling of capture CTS (including measuring, weighing, and photographing). At the end of the workshop we will remove all drift fence and pitfall traps and rehabilitate any disturbed soils.
