Hastings Natural History Reservation

Traditionally, the reserve system has been used for field research and long term scientific study. While science can provide explanation of the structure of environment, species, etc., Art can be used in collaboration and inspire us to contemplate emotional significance of a place. My intention is to use my artistic practice to interpret the singular qualities that contribute to the uniqueness of each reserve, as well as to explore the reserve system's significance in an artistic context, through the use of photography. The intent is to observe and to ask the following question: "What is the state of the reserve system and why does it matter?" At a time when funding has been reduced, every resource of the University is being questioned and critiqued for its particular value. Through my photographic process, I will conduct a survey of the reserve system throughout the diverse landscapes of California. This project will not only draw on my personal experiences and observations but will also draw on the insights of reserve managers. An essential part of the study is their ability to highlight the resources that are most significant to each reserve. Particularly, their knowledge of history and development can aid in the understanding of a landscape as well as the current Natural Reserve System as a whole.
