The proposed research combines aspects of phylogenetics, population genetics, and behavioral ecology to address key questions at three scales: (i) the biogeographical and demographic history of lineage interactions species-wide and the relationship between lineage divergence and genetic isolation; (ii) a comparative analysis of the dynamics of the long- and short-term interactions between the terminal lineages at sites with complete vs. incomplete isolation; and (iii) behavioral experiments to test hypotheses about the relative strength of behavioral isolation. Our integrative approach will enhance understanding of the history of the lineages that comprise the ring species and generate new insights into the causes and consequences of establishment of reproductive isolation in this textbook example of speciation in action.
