Hastings Natural History Reservation

We are attempting to collect enough wildlife samples to determine the prevalence of E. coli H:0157 in wildlife populations. Since the 2006 spinach crop contamination, there have been many reports of illegitimate management practices implemented by farmers under the pressure of corporate buyers. These practices include, removal of habitat and indescriminate poisoning of wildlife and waterways. Our goal is to provide the scientific evidence that can diffuse concerns of wildlife facilitated crop contamination. With this data we are laying the foundation for future studies and management policies.
