Eriogonum nortonii is a rare (CNPS 1.B), annual typically found on the granitic terrain west of the San Andreas Fault Zone in relatively open areas of chaparral. Herbarium voucher specimens collected from 1891 to 2006 indicate the distribution of E. nortonii to cover the Gabilan Range from Pinnacles National Monument to its northernmost end, as well as the Sierra de Salinas and Carmel Highlands of the Santa Lucia Range. The main objective of my research will be to investigate the relationship between the Gabilan and Santa Lucia populations of E. nortonii. More specifically, I would like to explore potential differences in the morphology, ecology, phenology, geology in addition to specific cpDNA loci of the two main populations of Eriogonum nortonii. Other than a species monograph, there has not been any prior research on Eriogonum nortonii. This project would provide baseline data not only for the species, but also for a genus that is of current interest to many botanists. Furthermore, Eriogonum nortonii has a highly restricted distribution. Palo Corona Regional Park is the only public land in the Santa Lucia Range to provide protection for this species. Much of its habitat along the coast (Carmel Highlands) is being or has been developed while nearly all of the populations in the Gabilan Range are protected within the confines of Pinnacles National Monument and Hollister Hills SVRA. As such, data from this project could potentially be used for purposes of land management and conservation as well as enrichment of park resources.
