Hastings Natural History Reservation

We will bring a group of 15 7th grade students from Adams Middle School for a 2-night, 3-day day visit during which grad student fellows will demonstrate various techniques for the study of ecology and natural history, and introduce the students to the habitats and organisms of Hastings. Activities may include insect collecting (sweep nets, coverboards, blacklighting for night flying insects), study of plant identification and adaptation (which may include a small amount of collecting and pressing of plant specimens), live trapping small mammals (along Big Creek), setting out track plates, study of size distribuition of western fence lizards (near ranch house), night hikes and observation of biodiversity in different habitats. All activities will be low impact and care will be taken to avoid disturbing organisms and ongoing research.
