Hastings Natural History Reservation

This course is designed for juniors interested in natural resources and their management. It offers an analysis of approaches employed to understand and solve conservation and environmental problems. Case histories are viewed first hand through one required weekend field trip and through the direct experiences of invited academics and professional practitioners presented during lecture periods. Examples of case histories include: biodiversity and endangered species/habitats; invasion ecology; environmental planning and land use; habitat restoration; environmental health; conflict resolution; and environmental education. In addition, biological/ecological, natural resource, socioeconomical, political, and management components of selected problems are analyzed in detail with the goal of understanding the complexities and interrelationships of the stakeholders involved in conservation/environmental problems and projects. The goal of this course is to demonstrate the rich variety of ways that natural science and social sciences/humanities interact to bring about solutions.
