Hastings Natural History Reservation

Tardigrade research in California is almost entirely limited to Schuster and Grigarick's work in the late 1960's and early 1970's. As part of this 4 year NSF grant we will be resampling and increasing the sampling sites of their work. We are looking for species makeup and diversity across the california ecosystem. We would like to sample in as many different habitat and microhabitats as practical. Tardigrade collecting involves removing 2cm to 4 cm patches of moss, lichens leaf litter, club mosses etc. and processing them. Collections will be cataloged and DNA sequences will be done. Hastings Reserve will recieve both electronic and hard copies of research results as well as a Key to identifying tardigrades. Prepared slides of the samples will also be made available to Hastings Reserve if they desire them. we would like to request housing and cooking facilities for 12 people as well as lab space to be used primarily in the evenings.
