Hastings Natural History Reservation

We propose to bring a group of 7th graders from Adams Middle school to study natural history at Hastings. Activities may include nature hikes, scavenger hunts, bird watching, observing variation in size and coloration of western fence lizards, collecting and observing insects with a variety of techniques (sweep nets, aerial nets, pitfall traps, night lighting), live trapping small mammals, collecting and identifying common plants, measuring and aging trees (using cores and counting tree rings). Only small numbers of plants or insects will be collected and so collecting activities will have minimal impact on populations. All work with vertebrates is catch and release or is purely observational.
