Excessive fine sediment in the hyporheic zone of gravel rivers inhibits important ecological and hydrological processes, notably limiting the survival of salmonid eggs. Interstitial fine sediment enters the hyporheos zone in two ways: it can be co-deposited with gravel in large scour/fill events, and it can infiltrate a stable bed. They generally form a "sand seal" that inhibits flow and further infiltration in the top several centimeters of the bed. Many basic questions about the mechanics and results are unanswered. What is a typical volumetric content of fines in a "natural" river? How does the sand seal depth vary over time in a natural river? What is the dominant process of depositing fines into the riverbed? I aim to address some of these questions through a combination of hydrodynamic computer modeling, physical modeling of infiltration and codeposition in flume experiments, and field sampling in California rivers. Field sampling will be limited to excavating the top several inches of sediment on gravel bars that are out of water.
