I plan to search for two species of the four species my thesis project focuses on: Allotropa virgata and Corallorhiza maculata. Once located, I will take 2 soil cores at each of 4 distances away from each individual plant specimen (10, 50, 100 and 500 cm). I will sample no more than 5 specimens from each species, resulting in a maximum of 40 soil cores in total. The purpose of this project is to investigate whether or not these plants are accurately designated as parasites. My analysis of the data obtained from the soil cores will determine the extent to which these plants' mycorrhizal symbionts benefit from their presence, and will also determine whether or not, and to what extent, these plants make phosphorus available in the soil. This will be determined by conducting phosphatase assays on the root tips that belong to these plants obtained from the soil cores mentioned above.
