Assess site and facilities for an upcoming ecological education course (2020). My research and educational activities center on the idea that prevailing cultural conditions are a significant (if not the primary) contributor of the systemic ecological problems that make up the Anthropocene. This is based on ecological systems modeling and empirical education research (both my own scholarship and that of others). To address the cultural-ecological problem, we have founded a school called the Oika Academy (Oiko being the root of the word ecology) to teach both scientists and non-science practitioners (such as artists, writers/journalists and new media professionals) how to communicate key ecological principles in cultural contexts. Place-based, direct educational experiences in nature that can be integrated into more sustainable ways of thinking are a critical part of what we teach. We have a legitimate ecological and educational mission and deeply respect the places we study and inhabit. Oika is funded by a philanthropic grant from the NoVo Foundation and is fiscally sponsored by TIDES Foundation of San Francisco and the Good Work Institute of New York. In previous field research as a geologist and ecologist, I spent a lot of time at field stations. Through these relationships I have been able to work with stations that understand the critical links between human cognition, culture and the biosphere. Some are open to hosting our classes that are typically small (10 or less) and low impact (we focus on contemplative exercises instead of experimental designs that disrupt organisms and manipulate habitats).
