Angelo Coast Range Reserve

We propose to use the Fox Creek Lodge for housing 3 researchers while we collect Ascaphus truei tadpoles from populations south of the Angelo Coast Range Reserve (Jackson Demonstration Forest; JDSF) and use of the science centre on the reserve to keep an aquarium/cooler attached to a portable water chiller (all equipment supplied by ourselves) to house tadpoles collected from populations north of the reserve and from JDSF. Our project aims to describe patterns of latitudinal and elevational thermal adaptations of Ascaphus truei tadpoles across their range from Northern California to Northern British Columbia. Because warming temperatures in freshwater environments due to anthropogenic activity such as river impoundment, diversion, and climate change are forecast for riverine systems, this research will allow us to understand the variable and regional threat that riverine species face based on their evolutionary history. Specific objectives: (1) Estimate critical thermal maximum (CTmax), thermal optimum (Topt), and performance of tailed frog tadpoles as a function of temperature. (2) Compare regional estimates of Topt with estimates of CTmax to understand the breadth of thermal adaptation across regions. (3) Collect ecological data for these same populations in order to determine the ecological underpinnings of variation in thermal adaptation.
