The General Entomology class offered at the University of California, Berkeley is the prime undergraduate class the educates undergraduates about the morphology, evolution, and classification of insects. As part of their first entomology class, students are required to collect and curate their own insect collection. This collection enables students to experience the excitement of collecting the insects, the time-consuming task of curating these specimens, and the often difficult task of identifying the specimens that they have collected. We have selected Angelo Coast Range Reserve as the location for an overnight field trip with the class since the reserve is one of UC, Berkeleys so that students can understand the Reserve System of the UC. Prior to this trip, students will be trained in several different insect collection techniques. Therefore, while at the reserve students may employ a variety of techniques that may include general hand collecting, sweeping, beating, and aquatic collecting. Leaving the habitat as they originally find it will be emphasized for all students. For example, if a student rolls over a rock to see if there is an insect underneath, he/she will be instructed to always replace the rock as originally found. The class will consist of approximately 20 undergraduate students and 5 graduate students along with the GSI and Instructor. We are hoping to stay during a weekend overnight on Saturday at the Fox Creek Lodge.
