The exchange of carbon, water and energy between plants and the atmosphere both respond to and directly influence the composition and dynamics of the atmosphere. Quantifying this exchange is a major challenge in ecosystem and Earth sciences. Stable water isotopes (H, D, 16-O and 18-O) can and have been used to characterize the water pools and flux pathways through the biosphere. This allows us to track water entering the biosphere as precipitation to where it is eventually returned to the atmosphere from soils, streams and groundwater aquifers via evaporation or transpiration by plants. As a post-doctoral researcher for the Keck hydrowatch center (http://hydrowatch.cs.berkeley.edu/Welcome.html) I am developing an isotope model that uses natural variation in the δD and δ18O composition of soil water, ground water, plant water and atmospheric water vapor to characterize the relative contribution of local water reservoirs to ambient humidity.
