Angelo Coast Range Reserve

Abandoned, fluvially eroded bedrock surfaces (strath terraces) are used ubiquitously in earth sciences as indicators of past river elevations. However, little is known about how, why and over what time period they form. Consequently, dates of strath surfaces, or overlying gravels can be difficult to interpret without a more complete mechanistic understanding of strath genesis. Several generations of strath terraces are present along the South Fork Eel River and Elder Creek. The goal of this project is to map in detail the strath surfaces preserved along the South Fork in order to characterize their morphology and relationship to overlying gravels in detail. Our hope is to provide mechanistic insight regarding how these features form. This, in turn, will aid in the interpretation of geologic dating of fluvial deposits in the Angelo reserve, as well contributing to a clearer understanding of the climatic conditions that lead to the formation and preservation of straths in the Angelo reserve.
