Research already conducted at Angelo Reserve by Mary Power and Camille McNeely in the South Fork of the Eel R and its tributaries within the Reserve boundary constitutes a significant portion of the knowledge base motivating my proposed project builds on. Target caddisfly species including Glossosoma penitum, Neophylax rickeri, and Dicosmoecus gilvipes, are present and dominant in the Angelo reserve. I am in contact with Camille, Mary, and Mike Limm (UC Berkeley) who are familiar with the behavior and ecosystem of these armored grazers at the Reserve. In order to investigate the influence of fluid mechanics on larval caddisfly location and behavior, I plan to conduct in-stream observations using particle image velocimetry (PIV--a light-weight field PIV is being developed at the Saint Anthony Falls Lab at the U of MN) and an acoustic doppler velocimeter (ADV). In-stream caddisfly larvae distribution studies will also be part of the project. Stream parameters such as discharge, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) will be monitored. Two stream-side flumes will likely be constructed to allow greater control of fluid flow. Flumes will be temporary structures made from wood and clay tiles. Flume length will be ~10ft, with weight 30 to 60lb, elevated .3 to 2ft off the ground on 2x4 boards standing on their sides or a few pieces of dead wood or rocks found in the vicinity of the flume site. Flumes will be located next to a stream in order to allow continual water circulation through the flume via tubing or pvc pipe siphoning. Caddisfly larvae will be captured and placed in a flume for a few hours to a few days to study their behavior and reaction to altered flow regimes, then replaced in the stream where they were initially found.
