Angelo Coast Range Reserve

Freshwater mussels will be collected from the South Fork of the Eel river for use in perfluorochemical bioaccumulation studies. These studies are part of a larger project to evaluate the biological effects of water reuse for sustainable urban ecosystem restoration. This project focuses on residual, water soluble, organic compounds commonly found in wastewater treatment plant effluent. As part of the biological work, we will try to make connections between observed chemical concentrations in recycled water and toxicological effects. In the initial sampling effort at the Angelo Coast Range Reserve, we wish to collect a small number of both Margaratifera falcata and Anondonta californiensus individuals to determine the most appropriate species for our work. Mussels from subsequent collections will be used for 28-56 day bioaccumulation studies in which uptake of perfluorochemicals from recycled water will be assessed.
