This project will compare how leaves of different ages on Sequoia sempervirens saplings in the understory take up atmospheric water directly through their leaves. This study will require placing plastic tents over 6 (approximately 1m tall) saplings for the duration of two consectutive nights. Three of these seedlings will receive six hours of misting with deionized water (from Valley Life Sciences Building at UC Berkeley) on the second night. This water has a different isotopic signature than the ground water used by the sapling and facilitate evaluation of foliar uptake. Foliage samples from all saplings will be collected periodically during the two days for both isotope analysis and fungal colonization evaluation. This site of the this study will ideally be in the redwood stand approximatedly 500m north of Wilderness Lodge on the east side of the South Fork.
