McLaughlin Reserve

The proposed visit is part of the 2017 Field Studies of Soil Resources (UCD 105/205) summer field course. We anticipate about 15 students + faculty will participate. We plan to conducted a soil lithosequence, which is a series of soils whose soil forming factors differ only in the parent material (geology). We would like to dig small soil pits (1 m length x 50 cm wide x 1 m deep) in sandstone, shale and serpentine to determine how soil properties differ among these parent rock types. Soil pits will be refilled at completion of exercise with minimal soil disturbance visually apparent.
