The Women in Science and Engineering (WiSE) UCSC Naturalists Group is designed to facilitate the sharing of natural history/ecological knowledge, identification skills, and passion for the outdoors. Each outing is lead by an experienced peer, and is usually attended by around 5-20 people including undergraduate and graduate students at UCSC, community members, and their families. The goal of this Younger Lagoon Walk is to inspire newcomers and seasoned YLR-enthusiasts to appreciate the immense biodiversity of the lagoon and patterns in the variety of habitats found there. We will spend some time sketching the landscape and bird watching in the covered lookout, then stroll the trail down to the beach, while IDing plants and animals we see and sharing knowledge about the history and natural history of the lagoon reserve. I'm the coordinator of the WiSE Naturalists Group, and will be the leader of the walk. Often the "leading" is more of a collaboration with other knowledgeable members of the group as they participate and get excited by things that we see. I will make sure that everyone leaves the reserve at the end of the walk. I expect the whole event to take about 2 hours, from 12pm to 2pm on Saturday, April 28th. Here is my verbiage for the event flyer that I will post around campus: Come discover and explore the Younger Lagoon Reserve, just outside our back doors at the Coastal Campus! Flowering plants, birds, and other fauna abound. We will spend time observing the uniquely restored and protected biodiversity of the lagoon, coastal scrub, and dune habitats. Bring a pen and notepad to sketch natural patterns you see as we discuss the ecological stories of these habitats, a camera to photograph the lovely spring wildflowers, or a pair of binoculars to get a good view of some of the 100 species of raptors, songbirds, and wetland birds were sure to see. For all experience levels and ages! This event will take place rain or shine!
