Camp Description: ADVENTURES AT BIG CREEK Ages 12-14 Join us for a rare opportunity to explore the ecology of the Big Sur coast with a 3-day, 2-night camping trip to Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve (located 40 miles south of Monterey). As part of the UC Natural Reserve System, Big Creek encompasses over 3,900 acres of undeveloped habitat along the Big Sur coast. Explorers will investigate how clean watersheds contribute to healthy oceans by studying the diverse ecosystems found at Big Creek. Hike along crystal clear streams and through redwood forests, grasslands, and oak woodlands. Explore the rocky shoreline along the edge of Big Creek?s Marine Ecological Reserve and perhaps go for a swim in the creek! Other activities for the week include kayaking on the Monterey Bay and working with Long Marine Lab?s marine mammal researchers and trainers to learn first-hand why protecting watersheds and oceans are so important to the health of marine animals. We hope you?ll join us for this exciting Ocean Explorers adventure! Please note: Participants need to supply their own sleeping bags and sleeping pads. Rustic camping facilities at Big Creek include running water and outhouses, but no showers.
