I am the instructor of "Field Marine Biology" (Biol. 317) at CSU Fullerton. This is an upper-division introduction to marine biology, with weekly field trips emphasizing natural history observations and ecological interactions. I am proposing bring up to 10 of the students in my course plus my Graduate Assistant, for a class field trip where the goal will be to explore the Big Creek and vicinity intertidal and terrestrial habitats. Specifically, we plan to take nature walks in the reserve and visit the intertidal during the morning lowest low tides, provided sea conditions permit safe access to intertidal areas. It is possible we would drive away from the Reserve to nearby areas with coastal access and appropriate tidepool habitat instead of visiting the Reserve intertidal areas. Because most of these students are primarily familiar with southern California urban habitat, the students will be expected to also gain a general appreciation for the natural history of more pristine central California habitat by participating in organized observational hikes to such destinations as the "Interpretive Loop" trail at Big Creek. I have led similar trips in past years with great success, both in my present faculty position at CSUF (1994-present), and also as a Visiting Assistant Professor or Teaching Assistant while at UCSC (1978-1984). I have also visited Big Creek on a number of occasions related to my research on the evolution of marine molluscs known as chitons (1978-present). Any collections of invertebrate animal specimens for teaching or research would be limited in scope and would follow State reporting regulations with my current California Scientific Collecting Permit (#801122-03, expiring 6/7/06) allowing the collection of invertebrates and plants and the capture and release of marine fishes (and other non-bird or non-mammal marine organisms). We expect to minimize disturbance in all our observational activities. We do not expect to capture any vertebrate species, even for observational purposes.
