The Nature Conservancy requests funding for a three-year project to identify the role of kelp forests in supporting marine biodiversity, to assess the impacts of kelp harvesting on fish and invertebrate biodiversity in kelp ecosystems, and to develop best management practices for kelp beds. The principal investigators will be Dr. Mike Beck of The Nature Conservancy and Dr. Mark Carr of UC Santa Cruz and the Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO). We intend to lease more than 200 acres of California kelp forests to ensure proper experimental controls and demonstrate the utility of leasing as a tool for marine conservation. We will document the biodiversity supported by kelp canopy habitats, and we will examine the potential impacts of harvesting on that diversity by conducting experimental seasonal removals of the kelp canopy at key locations. We will also analyze the role of kelp canopies as nursery habitats for rockfishes. We will publish the results of our study in scientific journals and modify them for outreach to government agencies, private businesses, and the public.
