I have been carrying out yearly follow-up censuses of honey bee (Apis mellifera) and bumble bee (Bombus spp.) abundances on transects in the coastal scrub communities south of Big Creek. I began monitoring these areas in 1998, when feral honey bee densities were at a low point due to the impacts of parasitic mites, and am continuing to track honey bee and bumble numbers to look for changes in the composition of pollinator communities through time. Transect surveys consist of repeated visual counts and are not manipulative. In addition, I propose to replicate pollen supplementation experiments to test for changes in the level of pollinator limitation in two coastal scrub plants, Scrophularia californica and Stachys bullata. I will establish 25 control and 25 pollen-supplemented plants for each species in each of 3 sites. Finally, to characterize some of the other bee diversity in this community, I propose to carry out pan-trapping and net sampling to create a bee collection.
