Spiders in the family Tetragnathidae comprise 51 genera. The long-jawed spiders in the subfamily tetragnathinae, which are the focus of this proposal, are a monophyletic lineage of 13 closely related genera, with 374 species described to date, 80% in the genus Tetragnatha. Tetragnathines include some of the most abundant and conspicuous species worldwide, and are characteristic of both wetland habitats and islands, some of the world's most fragile ecosystems. I propose to examine the biogeography and phylogeography of species of tetragnathines in California. I have already documented patterns of diversification of species across the Pacific. It is now important to assess the patterns of diversification of the continental ancestors of species that have diversified in the Pacific, and how populations in California are structured, whether by watersheds or geographic distance. I will continue to use the methodology I have developed over the last 20 years of research on the group. i. Collection and sampling strategies. I will collect and identify tetragnathine spiders from Big Creek Reserve (approx. 8 individuals of each of 5 species). These collections will be conducted to determine species abundance and diversity in natural areas, to provide behavioral and ecological attributes for the species involved, and to provide fresh specimens for molecular study. ii. Molecular analysis of representative taxa. Molecular DNA data will allow assessment of relationships between populations and species. I have already conducted extensive molecular work on this group from the greater Pacific region. iii. Care of vouchers and other collections. Specimens will be deposited in the Essig Museum of Entomology, and will form the basis of my research program.
