Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve

This will be the 8th year of this class at Big Creek. The class is focused on introducing students to the Big Sur/Big Creek environment, and applying sereral field methods for data collection, description, and survey. Students and staff will camp at Redwood camp, and spend one or two nights at Highland camp. Specific activities are: 1) Hiking to learn about the environment (Interpretive trail, Highlands trail, Hot springs trail, Canogas Falls trail). 2) Stream surveys including mapping and steelhead surveys (Big Creek mainstem, and one mile up from the confluence on both Big Creek and Devils Creek). Surveys involve mapping stream dimensions, and visually censusing steelhead (mask/snorkle). 3) Intertidal surveys (to be conducted in Jade cove) using quadrat/transect methods. No collections. 4) Sea otter and seal visual census (from the cliffs). Oystercatcher point to Esalen, including Big Creek Marine reserve. 5) Plant community surveys (no collections), using hiking trails listed above) 6) Geology: visual surveys and discussion: Hot spring trail 7) Student projects: non-invasive investigative projects based on techniques learned in class.
