Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve

According to the new Jepson Manual (updated in 2011), Frangula californica includes multiple subspecies, one of which includes F. c. tomentella, a previously recognized species of coffeeberry. We will sample multiple populations of F. californica californica and F. c. tomentella from throughout their ranges and subject them to phylogenetic and phylogeographic analysis. The results will shed light on the morphological and genetic changes that have accompanied the local adaptation, migration (and perhaps speciation) in Frangula during the last ten glacial cycles.
