I am a UCSC Environmental Studies alumni (class of 1980), and my friend Dick Norris suggested that I contact you about the possibility of visiting Big Creek for a day later this month. I was a student in Ken Norris' Natural History Field Qtr back in 1978 (Dick's wife Teresa was also in the Field Qtr that year). In the fall of '78, I was on the first crew that Ken organized to build camping areas and trails, and help restore the old building which later became the University Center at the then-newly acquired reserve. My husband Patrick and I actually met one another for the first time that fall while working on the trail crew. We also lived and worked at Big Creek the following summer, building trails. Patrick graduated from UCSC in 1978 with a degree in Earth Science, and later graduated with a Masters Degree in Hydrology from the University of Arizona. Big Creek is special to us both for it's timeless beauty and also for it's place in our own personal history. Patrick and I have lived in Virginia for the past 25 years or so. We are co-founders and owners of Waterborne Environmental,Inc., an environmental consulting firm based in Leesburg, Va. Patrick has an upcoming conference in San Francisco to attend, and I am going to be joining him on March 25th. We plan to revisit some of our old haunts along the California coast - Ano Nuevo (I was an intern there, long ago), Santa Cruz, and Big Sur. We will be spending a couple of days in Santa Cruz, and then we plan to head south - we have reservations at the lodge at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park on the 29th and 30th of March. We were wondering if it might be possible to spend an afternoon at Big Creek Reserve during that time, to hike and take in the beauty of the reserve once again.
