Taking as a starting point Eliot Howard's 'Nature of a Bird's World', Myers and I are not interested in critiquing the truth of assertions (.e.g. 'bird territories' for which we are incompetent. We are interested in an analysis of the discourse characteristics used by writers whose observations of and about birds have survived. Micah Myers has compiled a substantial list of records of bird sitings in Greek and Roman times, and I have much material on such in the Middle Ages.And, of course, the extensive material after Howard is readily available to us. At Big Creek for two or three days we will: Bracteting, setting aside, what we know of such observations, we will record on walks through the reserve, out remarks, our descriptions, of birds sighted, according to what occurs to us as interesting and relevant. In writing up our comparative analysis of 'the discourse of nature observation", specifically of birds, we will examine all, or at least many, of the 'observation acts' we have collected, including our own. According to contemporary programs of analysis of specific discourses, we will try to locate, describe and organize the 'things said' about birds. It is quite important, in our view, to have this last batch of 'words and ideas used in bird descriptions' to avoid a mere history of such, and to construct an analysis of the nature this discourse.
