Landels-Hill Big Creek Reserve

The purpose of this class is to gain knowledge and experience in underwater sampling techniques. We will be diving on SCUBA at two sites: in front of the reserve beach north and south of the creek mouth. Our study will be to compare algae community structure at both sites. We will also look at snails, urchins, and stars (not to genus or species). We will be doing two dives each day for two days. Each dive will consist of 3 transects (25M). Along each transect Nereocystis and Macrocystis will be counted in a 2-meter swath. There will also be 5 quadrats along each transect at randomly determined points. Within each quadrat the following algae will be counted: Pterygophora, Laminaria, Eisenia, Cystoseira, and Desmarestia and the following invertebrates will be counted: snails, urchins, and seastars.
